The 2017 Atlantic 9-Ball Tour Grand Finale weekend kicked off on Friday May 19 with the $1000 added Early Bird Event. All player classifications were allowed to enter. The format was Single Knockout races to 6 in 9-Ball using regular tour rules. 58 players threw their names in.
By Round 3, the field was down to 16 players, with plenty of heavyweight bouts on the card. Results rolled in as follows: Chris Dempsey narrowly defeated TJ Martin 6-5, Leo Sanchez downed Mike McNamara 6-3, Jeff Saulnier upended Dave Boone 6-2, Nok Manolino overtook Bob Miklos 6-3, Pat Briand took down Jason Robichaud 6-2, Greg Wilson squeaked by Rocky Johnson 6-5, Rick Leon beat Jason Thomas 6-4, and Bill MacPherson got the nod over Bruce Lilly 6-2.
8 Players remained for Round 4. Dempsey ended Sanchez’ run 6-4, while Mantolino was successful over Saulnier 6-4. In the bottom half of the bracket, Wilson extended his hopes, beating Briand 6-2, and MacPherson KO’d Leon, alos by a 6-2 scoreline.
The semi finals saw Dempsey make quick work of Mantolino 6-1. Meanwhile, MacPherson and Wilson went hill-hill, Macpherson eventually coming out the victor.
The final was no less dramatic, as MacPherson faced his second straight match going down to the final game against Dempsey. This time, Dempsey took the deciding game, and the title of Early Bird Champion.
Dempsey earned $700 as the winner, while MacPherson received $475 for second.
